Well the dog days of summer are approaching quickly here in the Texas hill country. We all enjoy those lazy days of floating the river, swimming in The Blue Hole or Hamilton Pool, boating, biking and being outdoors. However, whatever, your outdoor activities include you need to protect your skin. Unfortunately, our skin does not enjoy the long term effects that the sun can and will provide.  As we all have learned our skin is the largest organ of the body. We must protect it from those strong rays of glorious sunshine. First, starting with a good sunscreen is imperative. You want to make sure that your sunscreen has an SPF of 15-30 with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide content for the best protection of your skin. SPF 15-30 will give you approximately 96% coverage from UVA/UVB rays. Reapplication is key to reaping the full benefits of your product. Also, depending upon your skin type as well as family and medical history you will need to apply more frequently.
Having your health care provider check your skin for the damaging effects of the sun is important. There are three main skin cancers:  squamous cell, basal cell and the most dangerous, melanoma.  Take a look at your skin. Moles that are irregularly shaped, larger in size or with multiple colors most often need to be evaluated by your health care provider. We here at Crescent View Medical are here to help you will your skin assessment, mole removals and overall health. Make an appointment to see a provider prior to those long hot days of summer. Your skin will thank you.
