Editor’s Note: This letter was read to the Wimberley ISD School Board by eight-year-old Sarah Cook after being selected in an essay contest by Oaks Alive, a group committed to protecting Wimberley’s trees. While this issue is largely involving an old tree being cut down for WISD construction and doesn’t direct involve the city, it seems the group plans on addressing the Wimberley City Council soon. This issue has also been addressed by Superintendent Dwain York in an article published in the Wimberley View on April 24 and again at the meeting this speech was presented. This has not been edited from Cook’s original version.
I am writing because I heard that the city of Wimberley cut down a 300 year old oak tree. When I heard this I did not believe it. I ask my dad to take me to the spot where the tree has been cut down. My father took me and I saw where the tree had been cut down. It made me so sad. I also saw that there were several other trees that are going to be cut down too. This is why I am writing this letter.
