WNBA: Augustus, veteran Lynx close out Stars 81-76

It was the same old formula for the injury-ridden, wet-behind-the-ears San Antonio Stars that has left them stuck in the WNBA cellar for much of the season.

Play hard enough to stay close until the end but then falter late.

Forward Seimone Augustus hit a couple of clutch buckets down the stretch as the 26-5 Lynx shook off a subpar game from MVP candidate Maya Moore to escape a game Stars squad that has lost eleven of its last twelve games.

“It’s a little bit about where we are at and how we are improving.” Hughes said. “To be a good teacher you sometimes have to take away and you have to talk about the way you play the game and it’s hard. We are literally one or two plays away from beating these good teams.”

Defense dominates in Wimberley's 31-7 win at Lampasas

Lampasas - Hunter Williams scored three touchdowns and the Code Red defense stifled the Lampasas offense the entire night as the Texans bounced back from a disappointing loss at Giddings to post a 31-7 win over Lampasas at Badger Stadium.

Williams also rushed for a tough 85 yards in helping spearhead a Wimberley offensive attack that saw several Texans get into the scoring column.

“Our defense really executed tonight and did a great job in shutting down a team that had been averaging about 40 points a game.” Texans head coach Doug Warren said. “We saw some things on film that we were able to use to our advantage.”

Although the wins have seemingly come few and far between, the Lady Texans have continued to battle and the hard work paid off handsomely in a fourth place finish at last weekend’s annual Hays Rebel Bash.

The Lady Texans finished fourth in the gold bracket after they finished 3-1 in Pool Play with wins over Del Valle (25-11, 25-8) Bandera (25-20, 25-13) and Connelly (25-12, 25-8). Their lone loss in pool play was to Stony Point (22-25, 15-25) who went through their pool unbeaten.

In Gold Bracket play, the Lady Texans beat Cedar Creek in three sets (20-25, 25-20 and 25-21) which set them up for a showdown with La Vernia in the semi-final round.

The Lady Bears beat Wimberley (11-25, 19-25) and would eventually go on to win the tournament.

The Lady Texans then lost in the Gold Bracket third place game to host Hays (20-25, 20-25).

The Wimberley Texan cross country team continues to progress in the early stages of the 2016 season. On Saturday September 3rd the Texans competed against a tough field with several regional powerhouses in 5A and 6A like Smithson Valley, San Antonio Reagan, and New Braunfels High School. Even with the crowded and challenging field, several Texan runners posted excellent times in the 3 kilometer race. For the boys, junior Craig Huey ran with the best and finished in 7th place with a time of 9:54, edging out other runners in the final 200 meters with a strong kick to finish.

CFB: Roadrunners Begin Wilson Era With Opening Win over Alabama State 26-13

San Antonio - It certainly wasn’t the earth-shattering debut the 22,380 fans at the Alamodome had anticipated – yet the UTSA Roadrunners were still able to usher in the Frank Wilson era with an opening 26-13 win over Alabama State - the first non-FBS school they faced to begin a season in five years.

It was a sloppy four-turnover outing that was also marred by numerous penalties that halted positive offensive drives, nonetheless the Roadrunners wasted no time in getting into the scoring column in the 2016 season.

On the opening kickoff, UTSA’s Eric Banks pounded Alabama return man Destin Porter at the Hornets 16-yard line as he headed upfield, dislodging the ball into the hands of Andrew Martel who recovered at the Hornets 6.

Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Giddings 24-13

Giddings - Four Wimberley offensive miscues and a late goal line stand by the Giddings defense helped the Buffaloes halt a second half Texan comeback in their 24-13 win on Friday night at Buffaloes Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter in which both teams failed to mount any significant drive, Wimberley quarterback Davin Masur was intercepted twice on successive drives.

The Buffaloes quickly capitalized on both errors with Treveon Johnson sprinting in from 35 yards after the first and then Jason James brought the other back for a 45-yard touchdown to give Giddings a 14-0 advantage midway through the second quarter.

WNBA: Short Handed San Antonio battles but falls to league-leading Los Angeles 70-61

San Antonio - Even though they dressed only eight players, the San Antonio Stars battled to the final quarter against the league’s best team.

But down the stretch the league’s best player Candace Parker – despite a poor shooting night – willed her Los Angeles Sparks (22-5) to a 70-61 win over the short-handed Stars in front of 3,992 at the AT&T Center on Thursday night.

Parker, who finished with a quiet 16 points, including 11 points down the stretch to fend off a game San Antonio squad that nearly lost rookie guard Moriah Jefferson to a slight ankle injury late in the second quarter.

Texans take off to big victory

Last year it took seven weeks for Wimberley to get into win column in football, but thanks to a pair of talented sophomores and a stingy defense that swarmed LaVernia tailback Wyatt Cowsert all night long, the Texans didn’t waste any time this year as they opened the season with a 33-7 thumping of the Bears at Texan Stadium.

Sophomore tailback Jake Cockerham rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown and fellow sophomore Guy Kypuros – who was called up from the junior varsity only a few days before – added a couple of long runs that kept Wimberley in good field position for most of the game.

“It’s certainly a much better feeling at this time than it was last year.” Texans head coach Doug Warren said. “We had confidence in both of those kids and all they have done is only what we have coached them to do.”

Crowder primed to shine in senior campaign

As a lifelong Wimberley resident, senior Colby Crowder knows what the expectations are for a community that usually thrives by the success of its football program.

Now in his final season of wearing the Texan blue and red, Crowder is not only one of the main components of the vaunted CODE RED defense – that has been a staple of Wimberley football for more than a decade – but he has now ascended being one of the vocal leaders on a squad that has already survived its share of turmoil before the regular season even began.

When two of the Texans’ main offensive threats – Hunter Williams and Logan McKinney - elected not to return to the team for various reasons, Crowder was among the few remaining veterans who worked quickly to address the issue in-house and help the team move past the distractions without so much as a ripple.

Sophomores shine in Texans' opening win over La Vernia 33-7

Sophomore Guy Kypuros rushed for 94 yards and fellow sophomore Jake Cockerham added 91 yards and a touchdown as the Texans opened the season with a resounding 33-7 win over LaVernia on Friday night at Texan Stadium.

Kypuros, who was called up from the junior varsity squad less than a week ago, made the most of his debut as he opened up the Texan offense to allow the quarterback tandem of Davin Masur and JoJo Weeks to score a pair of touchdowns in the victory.

“It’s certainly a much better feeling at this time than it was last year.” Texans head coach Doug Warren said. “We had confidence in both of those kids and all they have done is only what we have asked them to do.”
