Editor’s Note: This interview with Wimberley I.S.D. Superintendent Dwain York was done in conjunction with last week’s story on W.I.S.D being named one of the top school districts in the state of Texas. Since many topics were covered, excerpts from the interview are listed here to give insights into many aspects of the school district. All statements in this story are quotes from York.
Meeting with Texas’ Commissioner of Education
Last week, Commissioner of Education, Dr. Mike Williams called me to schedule a meeting with him to discuss several items, including our successful campus ratings reported in the new 2014 Accountability System and Legislative issues. Commissioner Williams began the meeting congratulating Wimberley ISD on our District STAAR scores and “Distinction Designations” per campuses. He was very complementary of the fact that Wimberley ISD was one of only 26 Districts statewide who earned the “Distinction Designation for Postsecondary Readiness.” He then asked me to share with him the teaching strategies, innovative best practices and any supplemental material/technology, that I felt attributed to our success. My first response was “quality and committed teachers,” combined with a strong administrative team.
