TxDOT to abandon RR 12 rest area: City of Wimberley and area organizations pick up the tab instead

The Texas Department of Transportation was ready to give up on the rest area just outside of Wimberley. The city of Wimberley wasn’t.
An overlook area just off the road, where cars have stopped and people have picnicked for decades, will now be maintained by the city, Wimberley Rotary Club and Keep Wimberley Beautiful.
With budget constraints, TxDOT has been tightening the belt, and one of the cuts was going to be abandoning Wimberley’s rest area. The state of Texas would, and still does, own the property, but the covered picnic tables and trash cans would have been left to deteriorate or removed all together.
