Junior Henry Wollam represented Wimberley High School at the Texas Future Problem Solving State Bowl in Austin on April 11.  Wollam, who is in Sheila Parker’s B2 creative writing class, placed third in the FPS scenario writing competition and was among three WHS students to compete against writers from around the state.
His work is now being considered for the right to compete at the International competition held at Iowa State University June 12-15.
This year’s scenario winners showcased storyboards and visited with other authors prior to the trophy presentations.
Wollam’s storyboard included original artwork by fellow creative writing student Audrey Marlett and is currently on display in the WHS library.
Future Problem Solving, or FPS, is an international program that offers critical thinking about global issues on various topics.
This year’s topics included:   surveillance society, desertification, social isolation and land transportation.
The scenario aspect of the competition involves writing a short story that takes place at least twenty years in the future, outlining the problem as it exists in the present, and focusing on the greater challenges that could exist in the future.  Movies such as “I am Legend,” “Minority Report” and “Elysium” are all examples of the “scenario” format.
Students in Sheila Parker and Brent Warren’s creative writing classes submitted scenarios to the contest.
All three WHS authors made the final round, including seniors Margaret Rowand and Natalie Shanklin.
Wollam’s scenario, “Anonymous”, takes place in the year 2040, when people struggle to connect to each other, as technological advances allow for less face-to-face interaction.
