One of the things I love about gardening is that there are lots of surprises. Each set of growing conditions favors some plants over others. This month the winner of beauty in my yard is the bright yellow, 1-2 feet high native plant called Damianita (Chrysactinia mexicana). It self-sows itself on dry soil and is especially fond of gravel. I have a gravel driveway and it volunteered to plant itself with no water on the sloped hillside.
