Strong year for hummingbirds

A buzzing beauty – the Broad Tailed Hummingbird in flight.

Jerry Hall

This has been a good year for hummingbirds in our area; I've had several reports of crowded feeders and buzzing beauties. Don't be too worried if your hummers fight over sugar-water feeders, even if you place them far apart. Some birds are simply extra territorial.
Do be worried if there are large spiders in the vicinity. Praying mantises and garden spiders are two major threats to these tiny birds. Mantises like to launch surprise attacks and spiders snare birds in sticky webs.
