When birding goes beyond the birds

On a recent birding trip to Brazos Bend State Park, Jerry Hall encountered more than he bargained for when he found an alligator. (Submitted photo)

I recently went birding at Brazos Bend State Park, which, as the name indicates, is located at a bend in the Brazos River, some 28 miles southwest of Houston. I encountered an alligator.  There were very few birds.  I was soaked by a surprise morning shower.  I thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
The alligator was a baby which was showed off by a park guide who held the snout tightly closed while letting me rub its surprisingly soft belly.
