Mable Head

Mable (Miles) Lehman Sands Head, 96, of Austin, went to be with the Lord on July 26, 2014. 

She was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Caldwell County and was one of eight children born to the late F.P.Miles and Della Sullivan Miles.

She resided in Austin, after residing in both Wimberley and Driftwood. She had lifelong friends from Austin High and loved people from all walks of life. When her first love, Bill Lehman, died she married Raymond Sands. She worked alongside him in his pharmacy and was involved in church at Woodlawn Baptist and then First Baptist Church Wimberley where she sang for years with the Wimberley Community Chorus enjoying the fellowship of others and the performances. God blessed her to be in the Miles Family, a large South Austin, hardworking, God-loving family led by her mother and seven siblings after the death of her father. Even though she didn’t’ have a career, college degree or formal accolades, she loved and influenced people her whole life and could light-up the room and “Be the Party” when she walked in the room. Her enthusiasm and fervor for life was infectious and it carried though her aging defying the odds and experiencing the death of three husbands and her youngest son in a tragic car wreck. She loved her last 17 years with her “pardner” Jim Deloney. They were blessed with a full life and shared it with all who knew them. We are very appreciative to Jim, Billy Chamberlain, her nephew and Alan Geistman, her son-in-law, for all the ways they took care of Mable’s life needs. She had a way of persuading you in to her activities and you loved every minute of it. 

She loved the Market Days at Wimberley always buying and selling (buying high and selling cheap seemed to be her strategy) and the camaraderie of all she met. 

Mable was very fashionable and always wore a hat, even though hats fell out of style as she grew older, they were always in style when Mable wore a hat. Her presence, when she was all dolled up and her spunky attitude, brought a smile to the faces of all that surrounded her. Her homes were always happy and inviting.  She taught us to make God the center of our life and to include him in our daily decisions. Mable taught all around her how to celebrate life. Mable's life taught us how to be strong and survive. 

She was all about family, which expanded to friends and friends of her children and worshipping the Lord.  She loved the San Antonio Spurs and it was fitting they would win the NBA Title - just before she left this world. She watched every game with fervor and expertise of a NBA coach with her lifelong friend Margaret Dickinson. When basketball season was over she dedicated her sports wisdom to the Texas Rangers and The PGA Tour. It was always amazing her command of statistics and of each of her favorite players. She loved music, especially gospel, and worshipped through song.

The family wants to thank Dr. Robert Emerson and Carol for all their personal care for mother. Mother’s four months at Grace House was a blessing with each caregiver and person there. They loved mother like their own and made the family feel at peace. 

Pall bearers will be Mark Malone, Michael Malone, Monty Sands, Zachery Sands, Natalie Geistman, Shu Yi, Brady Templeton and Ben Cambron. 

She is survived by her son Larry Sands and his wife Cathy and daughters Jan Lehman and husband Alan Geistman and Margie Olivia Malone, five grandchildren,  four great grandchildren. 

She is preceded in death by her husbands, William (Bill) Lehman, Raymond Sands, Manley Head, and her youngest son, William (Bill) Lehman Jr., her parents F.P. and Della Miles and her siblings Cloister Miles, Douglas Miles, Benny Miles, Olen Miles, Margie Speer, Claudia Chamberlain and Mary Sterzing. 

Visitation was Wednesday July 30 at First Baptist Church in Wimberley with services following and then burial at Driftwood Cemetery and fellowship in the Community Hall at Driftwood.
