The Wimberley View is pleased to announce it has hired the first staff writer since San Marcos Publishing LP bought the paper in March of this year.
Longtime Wimberley resident Gary Zupancic is joining the Wimberley View team.
“We are excited to bring Gary in to work for the Wimberley View,” Editor Dalton Sweat said. “When we started looking for a person to be our reporter, we wanted someone with experience and someone who knows Wimberley, and Gary has both of those qualities.”
Zupancic has years of experience in journalism and within the Wimberley Community. He served as the journalism teacher and Public Information Officer for Wimberley Independent School District from 1997 through 2012, experience which will help him cover the school district and school board meetings for the View.
“The school district is the lifeblood of Wimberley,” Sweat said. “To keep the community involved, we have to cover the schools as much as possible. Gary’s ties to the school district make this a natural fit that will give readers the inside edge on everything happening at W.I.S.D.”
Zupancic, who received his Masters of Arts in Communication from Stephen F. Austin State University, also taught journalism as a graduate assistant and for the University of Houston Clear Lake.
Beyond his time as a teacher, Zupancic has over 20 years of television experience as a producer, writer, and videographer for Houston-area stations, NASA and other independent companies. He has stayed in touch with the Wimberley community in recent years by covering Wimberley City Council meetings for the News Dispatch.
He and his wife have been a part of the Wimberley Community for 18 years
