Herb Society luncheon is tasty affair

Herbs can flavor just about anything and make it better. The mostly ladies of the Herb Society of America’s Hill Country Unit celebrated their only fundraiser of the year, their annual luncheon on Friday, November 4.

The presentation of the morning was by Trisha Shirey, Director of Flora and Fauna at Lake Austin Spa Resort. She is the author of the book, Herbs for all seasons, all reasons.

Her presentation offered new varieties of herbs, how they are used at the spa’s gardens, which varieties of the herbs are the best, what kind of herbs are used for butterflies, sprinkling parsley pollen from when the plants flower, to plants that attract ladybugs.

Sections of River Road to close for two months

Construction has closed down a significant portion of River Road for the next two months.

During the Memorial Weekend Flood of 2015, River Road was damaged by erosion leaving a portion of the road base exposed.

The city of Wimberley has secured a contractor, Myers Construction, to repair the riverbank and prepare it for the next rise of the river.

“We had a significant cut in the May flood that left the under part of the roadway exposed,” City Administrator Don Ferguson said. “We have to fortify that embankment to protect it from future erosion.”

The city worked with local property owners to come up with a suitable plan both stability-wise and esthetically.

There are two portions of the roadway on River Road between Leveritts Loop and Wayside Drive that will be repaired.

Farmer's Market accident sends two to hospital

An accident at the Wimberley Farmer's Market sent at least two people to the hospital.

According to Wimberley Fire Chief Carroll Czichos, a vehicle was trying to leave the farmers market when it accelerated and ran into a van and vendor area striking at least one person.

That person was taken to the hospital via Star Flight with what a Hays County Sheriff Public Information Officer called non-life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s official described the accident as “auto-pinned” meaning at least one of the victims had been pinned by the car during the accident.

A second person was taken to the hospital by the Wimberley EMS.

The two vehicles involved in the accident sat perched above Ranch Road 12 off the edge of the thrift store at the corner of Ranch Road 12 and River Road.

Impacts remain from Halloween flood

One year ago this week, Wimberley was struck again by a second record flood. The Halloween flood of 2016 may not compare in terms of total damage to the Memorial Weekend Flood, but it left a lasting impact on the lives of many in Wimberley.

Christy Degenhart, who owns Ace Hardware with her husband Tad, remembers the morning vividly. She was at her parent’s house on Cypress Creek with her children when her husband came flying in the door.

“His headlights were hitting the creek, and it was about 15 feet from the house,” Degenhart said. “The creek is normally about 70 feet away.”
