Input on disaster response

The great floods of 2015 are a year in the rear view mirror, and thinking about what could have been done differently that would have helped minimize the effects of those or any other emergency was the big question.

That was the purpose of the community meeting held at the Community Center on Wednesday night, with all council present and Mayor McCullough as moderator. Any suggestions from the community were welcomed.

“We’re here to try and find out from the community what we can do better when a calamity happens again…what we can do better,” reiterated McCullough. McCullough brought up that at the time of the floods, one of the council members was watching his property wash away, while the other was fighting for their life against the flood’s waters.

Local couple dies in out of state accident

According to multiple reports, a Wimberley couple died in a car accident in Indiana last week.

WANE-TV in Indiana reported that Jimmy Hord, 71, and

Sherry Hord, 67, of Wimberley were killed when their truck with a camper turned over on Interstate 69 in Steuben County.

“According to investigators, a pickup truck pulling a 30 foot camper rolled over in the median,” the report from WANE-TV said. “Emergency responders found the driver on the ground in front of the vehicle and a passenger pinned inside the truck.”

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the report, witnesses described the vehicle going around a curve when the camper trailer began “to sway back-and-forth.” Investigators believe the driver over-corrected causing the vehicle to turn over.

Best in the State

Reporter Gary Zupancic and Editor Dalton Sweat show their TPA Awards

The Wimberley View took home four statewide awards from the Texas Press Association including two awards for first place.

This is the first time the View has won a Texas Press Association award since 2009.

“We have put a lot of hard work into to producing the best weekly newspaper possible for the Wimberley community and it is nice to have that hard work recognized,” General Manager and Editor Dalton Sweat said.

Nearly 150 newspapers in the state of Texas entered the Texas Better Newspaper contest, hosted by the TPA, with more than 1,500 entries. Each paper is then sorted into divisions in order to separate daily, semi-weekly and weekly newspapers into groups of similar circulation.

After what the community of Wimberley did in the hours, days, weeks and months following the Memorial Weekend Flood, it seems like an impossible task to individually recognize everyone who came to help. The city of Wimberley is trying anyways.

The city has asked for nominations from locals to help identify those people that deserve recognition for their efforts in helping rebuild Wimberley. Before the last Wimberley City Council meeting, the names of the first round of nominees were listed off with Mayor Mac McCullough forcing each to stand for individual recognition

Community Garage Sale a hit

Jean Albarado shows her wares to customer Gregory Ross at the Community Garage Sale.

Every so often, you realize that there is so much stuff lying around and it has to go somewhere else because you keep bumping into it and vow to get rid of it somehow. Wimberley being a small town, during those times that there are no weddings or other events renting the Community Center, they can hold a Community-wide Garage sale. Like last Saturday, June 18.

We had 300 to 400 turn out,” said Tracy Calamari, Director of the Community Center. “It was a good turnout, good and steady.” She said it’s a great way to get rid of unused things around the house. “The cost for a booth is $25 and you get to keep all the profit.”

Although in the past, when it is held during Market Days, the turnout is more, but already the Community Center has two more scheduled, one on Saturday August 13 and Saturday October 29,

Rollover near river sends two teenagers to hospital

The truck came to rest on its roof nearly 50 yards from the roadway.

Two teenage girls were taken to the hospital after the F150 they were driving left Ranch Road 12 and barreled towards the Blanco River.

According to witnesses on the scene, the truck was headed towards Wimberley just before the Blanco River bridge when the breaks locked. The driver of the vehicle in front of the truck said he didn’t know why the breaks were hit, but he heard the squeal.

The truck slid off the right hand side of the roadway before veering hard left and crossing the opposite lane of traffic. It went through the ditch, hit a wooden fence and continued into a field between South River Street and the river.

The witness said the truck then rolled over multiple times before coming to rest on the roof around 50 yards from the road, about halfway to the river.

Nearby drivers came to the aide of the girls before emergency personnel arrived.

Sales tax downturn

For only the third time in since 2011, Wimberley’s sales tax allocations, which reflect the amount of sales made within the city limits, fell compared to the same month last year.

For the last year and a half, Wimberley’s monthly reports were blowing the previous year out of the water with month-over-month increases as high as 18 percent. That trend appears to have slowed as allocations representing the month of March fell a little less than two percent compared to last year and allocations just released for the month of April were only two percent higher than last year.

The last time Wimberley had two consecutive months of slow sales tax growth was in early 2011.

Still, it doesn’t appear to be time to worry about the local economy.
