Texas State spanks Prairie View A&M in home opener 63-24

It was quite apparent after Texas State’s first quarter explosion that the only thing left to look forward to was Prairie View’s energetic marching band’s halftime show.

And while the “Marching Storm” didn’t disappoint – even in a quicker-than-usual performance - it was certainly the Texas State offense that delivered most of the fireworks on Saturday night in Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats temporarily erased the memories of a previous week thumping at Florida State for at least a week as they pounded Prairie View A@M 63-24 in a runaway effort that was highlighted by a Texas State school record 95-yard punt return by Brandon McDowell.

Somerset sprints past Texans 37-17

Somerset - For the third consecutive week, the Texans found themselves rather reluctant participants in a track meet.

And after spending much of Friday night chasing Somerset sophomore tailback Roger Villegas around Bulldog Stadium, the Texans will most likely decline any further invitations.

Villegas rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns and Jose Avila contributed 202 yards and a touchdown to pace Somerset (2-1) over Wimberley 37-17 Friday night in Somerset.

The Texans got on the board first with Hugo Huesca connecting on a 35-yard field goal with 3:08 left in the first quarter.

But from that point forward, the Bulldogs took control with Villegas breaking loose for long touchdown runs of 69 and 63 yards on consecutive Somerset offensive possessions.

Big plays propel LaVernia over Texans in opener 29-13

LaVernia - All week the pre-game chatter from a pair of tradition rich opponents centered around defense.

But strangely enough, the two biggest plays of Friday night’s season opener occurred on special teams.

Wyatt Cowsert and Jaymee Burns each scored on long kickoff returns for LaVernia as the Bears secured a 29-13 win over Wimberley at Bear Stadium.

Cowsert’s took the game's opening kickoff, picked up a couple of key blocks and sprinted ninety yards downfield for a touchdown before fans could get settled into their seats to give the Bears an early 6-0 advantage.

LaVernia tailback Christian Bruce scampered in for the 2-point conversation a play later and the Bears had a quick-as-lightning 8-0 cushion only fifteen seconds into the contest.

Lady Texan volleyball player Jacey Smith played in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star game on Saturday.

Smith was voted on to the team by coaches from around the state of Texas after leading Wimberley deep into the playoffs this season.

“I think she is a great player, and I’m excited to watch her career at Abilene Christian University,” Claire Gay, assistant coach for the Red All-Star team, said. “She is very knowledgeable. She was available on offense and smart on defense. “

Jacey played for the Red team, which won in three straight sets 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19.

The Texas Girls Coaches Association Assistant to the Executive Director Lee Grisham helped coordinate the All Star game. He also happens to be one of the most successful coaches in Wimberley High School history.
