Wimberley senior volleyball player Jacey Smith was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association 4A All State team and All Star team.

“Both are very prestigious awards,” Volleyball Head Coach Thomas Kane said. “This was chosen by coaches from across the state, and those coaches who had played us spoke well of her. That is a testament to the presence she had on the court and the success she had on the court.”

Smith led the Lady Texans in both kills and blocks. Statistically, she was near the top of very category on the team.

“Jacey is just the ultimate competitor,” Kane said. “She hates to lose and leaves it out on the court every time. She has worked very hard to be the player that she is and that showed on the court.”

Texan basketball preping for district with tournament play

The Texans took three lopsided wins on the way to a 3-1 week and an overall 4-4 record.

Now that the football season has ended, five players (four seniors and one sophomore) returned to the basketball team.

“They got to practice as a team Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” Basketball Head Coach Jeff McDorman said. “With the addition on the news guys, they gelled really well with the other guys. I was pleased.”

The lone loss of the week for the Texans was a 75-70 game against Stacey. From that game on, the Texans blew the doors off of every team they faced.

The first victory came against from a 71-38 drubbing of district foe Canyon Lake, though this was not a district match up.

Texans now Area Champs

The Wimberley Texans football team combined a relentless offensive attack and a fierce defensive mentality to hold off Orange Grove 21-6 in their second post season game this season.

The Texans defense shined again in their second playoff game, only permitting six points in this game after posting a shut out versus Pearsall last week.

“Well defensively we wanted to make them earn everything,” said Head Coach Doug Warren. “We needed to make them earn every yard. We also wanted to make the effort to be the more physical team.”

“We knew they had a high-powered offense,” added Warren. “I thought that was something we hadn’t really seen up to this point in the season. We hadn’t really played a team that were big hitters on defense either. We hadn’t really been hit too hard.”

The Wimberley Texans basketball team has quickly been introduced to the ups and downs of a long season in only two games.

Senior Will Simpson may have had the game of the year last week opening up the season with 30 points in a victory over the Llano Yellow Jackets.

“He did really well,” Coach Jeff McDorman said. “As of right now, the way he goes is kind of how we go as a team. He is a good player.”

The Texans beat the Yellow Jackets 63-57, but the game was even closer than the six-point margin would lead you to believe.

Wimberley was down eight points during the third quarter before storming back. It was a tight ball game until the team hit crunch-time free throws to pull away.

Texans Roll in Post Season Opener

The Wimberley Texan football team traveled to San Antonio tonight to take on the Pearsall Mavericks in thier first post season game of 2014. The game was one-sided from the very beginning, with the Texans taking the early advantage and maintaining their intensity on both sides of the ball through the contest.

After going up 14-0 early in the first quarter, the Texans began to implement their season-long strategy of running the ball effectively in an effort to control the clock, and playing oustanding assiagnment defense.

The Texans tacked on a few more scores in the second quarter to take the halftime score to 34-0, and basically out of reach for the Mavericks.

The Wimberley Texans football team took to the road on Friday night to take on the Navarro Panthers for the 4A Division Two Region Four District 13 championship. Both teams were undefeated in district play and both had won their previous six games heading into this matchup.

The first half was a back-and-forth slugfest, as both teams attempted to impose their will on the other team’s defensive unit. Both sides pride themselves on their ability to run the ball, and that was the focus for both teams throughout the game.

The Panthers’ rushing attack proved to be too much for the Texans’ defense to handle, and the home team won the game 28-13.

“We knew that was a good football team over there,” said Head Coach Doug Warren, “And we just can’t make the mistakes that we made. We got beat by a better team tonight.”
