Texans overcome 15 point deficit, tied for first place

“It was one of the biggest comebacks in the shortest amount of time I’ve experienced in 26 years coaching,” Texan Head Coach Jeff McDorman said.

Last week’s game between the Texans and the La Vernia Bears may have been just another district game, but in the end it felt like a whole lot more.

With a win, the Texans would keep their district title hopes alive while a loss would send them to a likely third place finish. Trailing by 15 points late in the fourth quarter, one of those options was decidedly more likely than the other.

“We’ve come back before from nine down late,” McDorman said. “We knew we weren’t out of it, and they kept fighting.”

With four minutes left in the game, the Texans put on their patented full court press.

In back to back games, the Lady Texan basketball team has exorcised the demons that plagued them from the first half of district play.

The first two games of district play were losses to Navarro and Cuero. Wimberley managed to sweep the two teams the second time around strengthen their playoff odds and keep the possibility of a district championship alive.

Wimberley beat Navarro on the road 60-51 two weeks ago. On Tuesday of last week, the beat Cuero 65-32 in a statement game.

“That was a team that beat us early on,” Head Coach Ted Dydalewicz said. “We knew that if we were going to advance, we had to go at least one and one in the series.  The girls took it to heart, and they played one heck of a game.”

Lady Texan soccer opens district play

The District 28-4A opener for the Wimberley Lady Texan soccer team proved to be a tough one as predicted.  The Lady Texans headed to play the Boerne Lady Greyhounds on Friday January 30th at Boerne ISD Stadium.  The Boerne team was a pre-season favorite to qualify for the state tournament and is currently ranked number 1 in the state in 4A Girls Soccer.  The Lady Greyhounds backed up that ranking with a strong showing against Wimberley in the first district game of the season for both squads.

Texans hand Cuero first district lose

The Texan basketball team has turned on a hot streak after winning their fifth straight game with a 54-46 victory over the Cuero Gobblers.

The Gobblers are one of two district teams to hold a victory over the Texans, making this win that much more important, even more so because Cuero was undefeated in district play.

“The first game against Cuero was a game that kind of got away,” Head Coach Jeff McDorman said. “So this was a huge win for us. It was big and we’ve got some momentum behind us.”

The Texans went into half time up two points with a 29-27 lead. The second half was sure to be a dogfight.

“We had a big student body crowd behind us and that helped,” McDorman said.

In the first game, Cuero’s Colby Ebrom scored 28 points. This time, the Texans had a plan.

Lady Texans storm back, now second in district play

The Lady Texan basketball team has extended its win streak to five games in district play after handily beating Gonzales and taking a huge win over Navarro.

There wasn’t much to speak of in the matchup against Gonzales as the Lady Texans  stormed out to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter. Alex Duncan lead the team with 15 points while Maengel Gonce followed up with 13 and Taylor Stoever wrapped it up with 11. The final score was a resounding 63-17 victory.

The story of the week came on the road against Navarro, who was previously undefeated in district play and ranked in the top 10 in the state of Texas.

Things didn’t look good early for Wimberley as they trailed 25-19 at halftime. At one point in the third quarter, the Lady Texans were down 13 points and it looked like the game may be over.

Texans back into the championship picture

After losing the first two games of district play, the Texan basketball team is back in the race for a championship after winning four straight games.

The Texans crushed Gonzales 82-30 to start off the week, but it was the second game versus Navarro that really stood out.

Both teams were 3-3 in district, and the Texans jumped out to an early 24 point lead.

Early on, Grayson Pate helped put the Texans up with 15 first half points.

“He came out in the first half on fire,” McDorman said. “He was three of five from the three point line in the first half. When he is hot, he has the green light. We get the ball to the shooters if they are feeling it, and he was.”

But Navarro wasn’t finished.

Friday January 23rd saw the Lady Texan soccer team travel through heavy snow on the way to the Kerrville Tivy Invitational Tournament.  While the snow let up before kickoff, the games on this day were chilly to say the least.  In the first game of the tournament, Wimberley faced Lakeview High School out of San Angelo.  The game was a back and forth affair until the Lady Texans finally broke the deadlock off a goal from sophomore forward Ella Riser, with an assist from Taylor Blass.  With the Lakeview defense softened up as a result, the Lady Texans were able to put another goal in when sophomore Caroline Biggers tapped one in off a deflected shot by Serena Frank.  Just before half, sophomore midfielder Madalyn Riser put in a third goal for Wimberley from an assist by Ella Riser, who was injured on the play after a run-in with the Lakeview goalkeeper.

Texans looking forward after tough stretch

The Texan basketball team is in the midst of a touch stretch. After running off nine straight wins, the Texans have lost four straight, but this isn’t the first tough stretch of the year.

In fact, the Texans have seen this type of streak before. The Texans opened up the season with a four game losing streak before hitting their stride with nine wins in a row, so this is the second four game losing streak of the season.

“We’ve got to get back on top of it,” Head Coach Jeff McDorman. “We’ve seen this before and we need to get on a roll these next few games.”

The losing streak comes at a bad time as it coincides with the beginning of district play. The Texans have started out 0-2 after losing to La Vernia 58-43 last week at home.

Texan basketball ups winstreak to six games

The Texan basketball team has taken its win streak to six games after two victories last week.

Friday’s game came down to a last second shot versus the Savio Eagles.

The game was tied at 63-63 with seven seconds left in the game. The Texans called time out to prepare a play.

They had two screens set, one for a shooter and the other for Hunter Johnson to break to the lane.

“I knew that he could get to the rim and maybe we could get free throws,” Coach Jeff McDorman said. “We were tied. He was my guy that we needed to get to the rim.”

Johnson broke open in the lane. He caught the pass and floated the ball to the rim. One bounce off the rim, a bounce off the backboard and the ball fell through the hoop.

Girls basketball starts district play, falls to Navarro Panthers

The Lady Texans started district play with a close loss to the Navarro Panthers after a big win over the Gonzales Apaches.

“The girls did a phenomenal job against Gonzales,” Coach Ted Dydalewicz said. “The defense was good and the offense was clicking. It was a good game by all the girls. They dominated that team and it allowed us to get everybody into the game.”

Aubrey Burttchell had another big game leading the team with 15 points along with Maengel Gonce who also scored 15 points.

“Burttchell is our sixth man or starts when we play four guards,” Dydalewicz said. “She filled in while we had an injury and did a great job.  She is in a rhyme right now.”

“They were unbelievable shooters. The offense was spread around, but the best thing was we played great defense.”
