Maltese Star Thistle: Keep Wimberley Beautiful

By Jackie Mattice

Just as the native beauty  Damianita we discussed last week flourishes with the present weather conditions, so do certain invasive plants we dislike so intensely we call them weeds. I first noticed the Maltese Star Thistle (Centaurea melitensis) in my yard during the hot dry summer of 2009. It then took over one whole section of my yard during the notorious summer of 2011.

Wimberley observances to honor Memorial Day

One of the hundreds of area grave sites to be honored on Memorial Day weekend by Wimberley VFW members, assisted by Scouts from Troop 127, is that of Ronald Bryson Vann in Wimberley Cemetery. Vann, a 1st Lieutenant in Battery C of the 40th Artillery, was killed in action in Vietnam less than two weeks before his tour of duty was to end. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal. Finding a lesson in a dumpster: A letter from the Editor

By Dalton Sweat
Editor

Two weeks ago, I talked about how it’s the little things in life that matter. Last week, I got a lesson reaffirming that statement, and it came from a rather odd place.
On Monday night of last week, I was working late at the Wimberley View office, as usual when the weekly deadline begins to approach. At around midnight, I needed a break, and since there isn’t much to do in an office a midnight, that break turned out to be taking out the trash. It was just a quick reprieve from the sometimes-incessant glow of a computer screen.
When I reached the dumpster in the parking lot, there was obviously something rustling inside. I figure it was just one of the stray cats that roam past my window every half hour like a meowing version of a cuckoo clock (more on stray cats in a minute).

Tales of a Celestial Sleuth, Dr. Don Olson

Dr. Don Olson has come up with a way to figure out the location and time for the settings of famous paintings. (Submitted photo)

From Staff Reports

Donald Olson, a professor of physics at Texas State University has devised a method of identifying locations and times for the settings of famous paintings using an unusual methodology. Weather facts, astronomical phenomenon, topography, tides, historical letters and diaries, well-known artworks, and assistance by experts in various fields all play a part in determining the facts behind a literary, artistic, or historical event. Olson regularly takes some of his students on location to research a hypothesis. He and his students recently matched the exact date and location on the beach in 1883 in Étretat, Normandy, where Monet painted Étretat: Sunset and concluded the time to be 4:53 p.m.

EMS Duck Race fundraiser this weekend

EMS Director Ken Strange gets in the water to do the dirty work. To start out the race, you have to be able to get the thousands of ducks into the water, so he flipped the boat.

From Staff Reports

When it comes to racing, the thought of a duck may not come to mind unless you’ve lived in Wimberley.
The fact that the race is based around rubber ducks makes an even more interesting thought to entertain.
The idea of little rubber ducklings drifting down the river may seem unique enough in itself, but intense race is actually more than just for fun. It is the main fundraiser for the Wimberley EMS.
