Learning Spanish through by teaching English

From Staff Reports

Woodcreek’s Maggie Carpenter has just finished an experiment in volunteering that’s helped her learn Spanish while she helps children learn English.
Last October, she began conducting “L Hora de Cuenta” or “Story Time” for 4- and 5-year-olds at Scudder Elementary School in Wimberley.
The program consists of her leading an ice-breaking exercise, such as a puppet show, and then reading three books and leading two songs. The books and songs are in English for these children whose first language is Spanish.

St. Mary’s of Wimberley is hosting Summerfest, a fundraiser and community event, on Saturday, June 7 with live music, raffles and more than $15,000 worth of auction items.
“Mostly it’s a community event to bring as many members of the parish of the community together with the members of the Wimberley Valley community to work and play together,” Mike Steinert, who is part of the festival’s committee, said. “It’s an important opportunity to get together and share your culture, and it’s a family function.”

Brewing can bring butterflies

By Jerry Hall

If you like butterflies, mark your calendar for November 1-4, dates of the 19th annual Texas Butterfly Festival in Mission. There will be field trips, a photo contest and “fun for the whole family,” according to festival organizers. Visit texasbutterflyfestival.com for information.
One concoction that helps attract butterflies at the National Butterfly Center in Mission is something called “banana brew.” It is spread on rough log segments throughout the center and supposedly is a butterfly magnet. Of course, it helps that there are some 300 butterfly species in that Rio Grande Valley locale.

Wimberley Players open a “selfie” of the human journey

From left to right: David Scott as Henry Antrobus, Bill Claussen as George Antrobus, and Taylor Pasche as Maggie Antrobus. (Submitted photo)

From Staff Reports

When the Wimberley Players perform “By the Skin of our Teeth,” June 13 – July 6, audiences can expect a masterwork of American theater. An allegorical comedy in three rapid acts, it is a “selfie” portrait of mankind’s journey through the ages — our achievements, challenges, foibles, and, most importantly, our inexorable endurance.
Full of clever devices, symbolism and metaphor, it’s an original fable with profound messages at its core.
It has been continuously revived in the US and Europe since it was written in 1942.  Its message that “things will be okay” makes it as popular and relevant today as it ever was.

Invasive Plants: Keep Wimberley Beautiful

By Martha Knies

Part of this a summary of an article on austintexas.gov.
The National Invasive Species Council defines invasive species as species that are “…nonnative (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.” Invasive species can be plants, animals, and other organisms (e.g., fungi). The biggest problem with these invasive species is that as they spread, they can dominate the native species, thereby displacing them and decreasing biodiversity.

Worm Composting Workshop

By Richard Parrish
Hays County Agrilife

The compostable waste we generate in our homes everyday is costing us and our communities resources that need not be spent. Everyone, who is producing vegetable waste eating and preparing meals at home or producing paper and cardboard waste, can compost that material without a great personal expense or government program.
