Clearing the air on sale of Mt. Baldy: Letter from City Gate Church Pastor

Editor's Note: A contract has been finalized for the sale of Mount Baldy, but the names of the buyers have yet to be released. Mt. Baldy, also called Prayer Mountain, was put up for sale by City Gate Church last month. The sale has not yet been finalized.  Those involved with the sale have told the Wimberley View that the buyers have “good intentions” for the property.

From City Gate Pastor Chad Hayes

There have been a lot of things said in our community with regards to our stewardship of, and intent to sell Prayer Mountain (Mount Baldy, Mount Alberta).  I wanted to make clear to our community where our church stands with regards to these issues.

Gary Knight of Wimberley and his son Kevin share an unusual hobby. Both Gary and Kevin have made great strides in the field of cryptography, though they both came to it independently.
Gary, an amateur cryptographer, deciphered the 1845 London Letters and several other ciphers, in addition to becoming the 36th person in the world to decipher all 10 of the Enigma Challenge ciphers. He is also an active member of the American Cryptogram Association (ACA).
In 2011 Kevin, a scientist of computational linguistics at Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California, headed a team and successfully deciphered the Copiale Papers, which dated back to the 18th century.

Texas Renegade, a band formed in 2000 by Andy Bertelsen and twin brothers Eli and Tyson Carver, all  former or current residents of Wimberley, have released their fifth CD, “Surviving the Flood,” their first since 2009’s “Bad Dreams and Other Things.” Bandmembers Justin Belz on rhythm guitar and Kyle Ortiz on drums form a tight rhythm section with Eli Carver’s bass showcased on many of the songs selected for the CD.
Longtime fans will appreciate the band’s ability to rock on roughly half of the 14 cuts included on “Surviving the Flood,” accentuated in part by the fine lead guitar work by guest musician Jeff Strahan.

When birding goes beyond the birds

On a recent birding trip to Brazos Bend State Park, Jerry Hall encountered more than he bargained for when he found an alligator. (Submitted photo)

By Jerry Hall

I recently went birding at Brazos Bend State Park, which, as the name indicates, is located at a bend in the Brazos River, some 28 miles southwest of Houston. I encountered an alligator.  There were very few birds.  I was soaked by a surprise morning shower.  I thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
The alligator was a baby which was showed off by a park guide who held the snout tightly closed while letting me rub its surprisingly soft belly.

Long-time Wimberley resident Johnson named VFW Rodeo Grand Marshal

Bill Johnson in uniform in the 1940s. He was a Lieutenant with a rifle platoon on Iwo Jima.

Editor’s Note: This article will be published in next week’s 69th Annual VFW Rodeo Program, which will be distributed in the Wimberley View, San Marcos Daily Record and the Dripping Springs Century News as well as at the rodeo.

Bill Johnson remembers a time in Wimberley when it seemed like the town vacated, at least those who could, to support the United States of America.
It was the 1940s, when Johnson moved to Wimberley, and World War II began.
“In Wimberley, Texas, there wasn’t anyone of fighting age that wasn’t gone,” Johnson said. “The whole town went. They all went early, and some stayed late. Some people where gone for five years. It was a good war, and we were united. When you fight on a team, and have a team spirit, it’s a wonderful feeling.”
