St. Mary’s Church hosting garage sale

This weekend, starting on Thursday, November 13 through Saturday November 15, St. Mary’s Church will be holding its annual garage sale. For as long as anyone can remember, this huge sale is a big part of the community and a place to find a perfect bargain right before the holidays.

It starts with the Early Bird sale on Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is only $5. Everything from appliances to zoology books with everything else in between will be featured.

Pastor Hilario Guajardo states the each year is different but it’s “great to see the generosity of people where they work together and donate their time and effort. The funds are earmarked by the financial council for needed repairs around the church.”

Chairperson Lisa Parkinson agrees.

Changes on horizon for Central Wimberley plan

The Wimberley City Council is proposing changes the Central Wimberley Master Plan, even considering changing the name to the Central Wimberley Conceptual Guide.

“Conceptually, we have not made any changes,” Wimberley Mayor Steve Thurber said. “The concept of the plan is still as it was to put in a document and a vision of what we want to maintain for Wimberley. We have made some proposed, cosmetic changes… In terms of mobility improvements and enhancements and going across people’s property (we’ve made changes) to allay the fears and concerns of the property owners.”

The document illustrates many new proposed roads that would cut through what is currently private property. While everyone involved has stated these changes would not be made unless the property owners consented, this has not relieved much of the public outcry.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918, the armistice of WWI was declared.  Armistice Day is still celebrated in the western world, celebrated by New Zealand, France and Belgium among others, honoring veterans. In the U.S., in 1954, Armistice Day became Veterans Day by an act of Congress. Veterans Day honors all American veterans, whether living, dead in action, or deceased from other causes.

Countywide veterans event to host local Bill Johnson as guest speaker

Longtime Wimberley resident Bill Johnson will be on hand to share some stories from his time in the Marine Corp including the Battle of Iwo Jima at ‘Finding Their Way Home: Expressions of Military Service and the Journey Back’ a free event and concert to be held on Nov. 9.

The event will explore the all too often forgotten time period when troops return from war and must readjust to civilian life. A time that for reservists and guard unit members can be a repeating cycle as the past decade has seen many of them called up to active duty as much as three to four times in a five year period.

Early voting ‘good,’

Across Central Texas, many counties are reporting record turnout at the polls. For Hays County, and specifically Wimberley’s Precinct 3, that does not seem to be the case.

It was expected that 2014 would not match up to the Presidential election in 2012 when it comes to voter turnout. Presidential elections are simply more popular, but the 2010 Gubernatorial is a different story.  Because the 2010 election didn’t have a particularly strong draw, many expected large numbers this year.

“It’s been kind of an average turnout,” Hays County Elections Administrator Joyce Cowan said. “We are having good voting, but to me it’s not a record.”

It is difficult to produce a clean comparison for early voting because Hays County has changed how it hosts early voting.
