Very few people know what it’s like to face leukemia. Even fewer know what it is like to do it twice. Still, that can’t describe what Lizzy Tennyson is going through, because all the weight of this terrible disease is once again on the shoulders of the 17-year-old Wimberley High School junior.
Through it all, her realism and attitude shine.
“My attitude towards it kind of changes sometimes, because there are days that I’m really upset and angry that this happened to me again,” Lizzy said. “But then there are days that I’m feeling well, and I can take my attitude and say, ‘This sucks, but I’m going to get over it like last time.’ This time I’m going to beat it. It’s not going to hide.”

Potential big changes for future of downtown

The city of Wimberley is planning the future of the Wimberley Square and beyond as the Central Wimberley Master Plan is nearly completed.
“It’s designed to try and preserve the unique character and integrity of central Wimberley as it exists today,” Wimberley City Administrator Don Ferguson said. “Under this plan, it’s a much more pedestrian friendly environment. It will reduce traffic congestions and organize parking and provide more parking for a parking challenged area. It’s a plan that will preserve Central Wimberley as a destination for those that live, work and visit this community.”
The council will have the option to change and approve the plan at their next city council meeting on Oct. 16. The city of Wimberley hosted a community meeting on Monday night to hear back from the community before voting on the proposal.

Swimming Season at Blue Hole Regional Park has come to a close after seeing record crowds through the summer.
This year, over 42,000 people swam at Blue Hole bringing in around $300,000 in revenue according to Wimberley City Administrator Don Ferguson.
Now, the offseason has arrived and Ferguson said it is much needed.
“We have a very tired staff and a very tired park,” Ferguson said.
While the park will remain opened, with swimming closed until May 2015, fewer visitors will allow the natural elements of the grounds to revive.
The money raised will go directly back into the park. Blue Hole has been set up monetarily with the goal of being self-sustaining.

Wastewater treatment plant to get independent environmental review

As the city of Wimberley plans and prepares for a wastewater treatment plant, those opposed to the plant has stated concerns about the effects on the environment.
In an effort to address those concerns, and make sure all bases have been covered, the city of Wimberley has asked for an independent review of the plans for the wastewater plant.
“One of the comments we hear a lot is that, while clearly the consultants developed this with environmental protection at the forefront, many think that is not the case,” Wimberley City Administrator Don Ferguson said. “In light of those comments, we think maybe we should get a third party to do an independent review of the application.”

A recreational vehicle caught fire in the front yard of a home in the area of West Summit Drive just before 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Nobody was injured in the fire.
Wimberley Fire Chief Carroll Czichos said that the cause of the fire will likely be listed as undetermined, because it seems to be an electrical issue.
“It definitely started in the battery compartment,” Czichos said. “There was a battery charger connected to a 110 volt and then to another charger, but I’m not an electrical engineer. So I’ve got to rule it undetermined.”
In an interesting twist, both the Wimberley and San Marcos fire departments were on scene quickly.

Square shoplifters caught by using new text system

“Shoplifter at Annie James. Cops are searching for them now.”
That text message was sent out to many of the shop owners on the Wimberley Square around 3 p.m. on Sept. 11. The following messages gave a description of a man and a woman along with what they were wearing. Minutes later, Hays County deputies arrested a woman in front of Cedar Chest for shoplifting.
“It just so happened that the girl had just left the store,” Kellie Duckett, owner of Annie James Boutique on the square, said. “I wasn’t here but my manager was here, and they saw a tag laying on the floor and that there was no dress. They walked outside and could see her at the Cedar Chest.”

Three women are killed everyday nationwide due to domestic violence. Locally there are 400 women victims a year housed at the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center. The growing violence of domestic abuse has come to the forefront due to domestic incidences of NFL players.
Keeping this in mind, Hays County Law Enforcement, the Hays-Caldwell Womens Center and local schools are spreading the word, “Join our team, say NO! to relationship violence” at the Hays County Government Center.
Wimberley High School is a partner in this effort. At a program kicking off October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, senior football player Jacob O’Connor, Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL) representative Dania Campuzano, and Coach Doug Warren were a part of the event to make the community aware of this problem.
