Election 2014: Abel Velasquez, County Judge candidate

Abel Velasquez

Abel Velasquez

Abel Velasquez is a product of San Marcos and, except for his years in the Marine Corps, has made his home here. He is also a former Hays County employee, having worked from 2004 to February of this year as a safety specialist.
Both of those things, he says, should help him convince voters the Democrat is a better choice for County Judge than re-electing incumbent Republican Bert Cobb.
“I see things differently,” he said. “I see we put a lot of emphasis on development, which is important. Just as important is mentoring leaders for the future concerns of Hays County. We are not doing that.”
A member of the Baby Boomer generation, as is Cobb, Velasquez said “it's time to start bringing in the new generation of politicians. We've got to get them interested, get them into politics and show them what it's all about.”

Election 2014: Bert Cobb, County Judge incumbent

Bert Cobb

Bert Cobb doesn't believe in pulling his irons out of the fire too early. And the Republican is proud of the fact that, except for redistricting and water, the commissioners he sits with as county judge have generally delivered unanimous votes.
Cobb, first elected in 2010, is seeking a second term. He faces Democratic challenger Abel Velasquez on Nov. 4.
A native of Bell County, Cobb grew up as a “military brat” before landing in Hays County on Aug. 1, 1979. He is also a practicing physician, but said he is closing his practice as of Dec. 1 after keeping it open the past year “mainly for” the five breadwinners his office employs.
“It takes a term to learn the job so that in your second term you can be effective,” he said. “I'd like to see some things come to completion.”

Veterans Court gets funding

After months of operating without a budget, officials with the Hays County Veterans Court had something to celebrate last week.
That's when Hays County Commissioners and Judge Bert Cobb officially voted to accept a grant of $99,997 from the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor's Office.
The grant had been requested in February. During the initial months of the court, which was launched earlier this year, everyone involved had been volunteering their time.
Vietnam veteran Alan Cameron praised the court for their decision. He said the possibility of a Veterans Court had been discussed as long ago as 2009, when he and Jude Prather (who has since become the county's Veteran Services Officer) met over coffee. “We discussed whether it was feasible,” he told the court.

Time to test your smoke alarm

When was the last time you tested the smoke alarms in your home? Was it last week? Last month? A year ago?
If you’re like many people, you may not even remember. Smoke alarms have become such a common feature of U.S. households that they’re often taken for granted, and aren’t tested and maintained as they should be.
However, working smoke alarms are a critical fire safety tool that can mean the difference between life and death in a home fire. According to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms can cut the chance of dying in a home fire in half. Meanwhile, NFPA data shows that home fires killed more than 2,300 people in 2012; many of these deaths could have been prevented with the proper smoke alarm protection.
