The district championship comes down to this game. If the Texans win,  they will finish the regular season on a seven-game win streak, take the district championship and ride into the playoffs with the momentum few teams can match. With a loss, Navarro would claim the first title in 4A Division II District 13 history.

Both teams have traveled a relatively similar path. Navarro has only lost one game this season and it was to La Vernia, a team that dealt the Texans one of their two losses this season. La Vernia beat Wimberley 28-0 to start the season and Navarro was handed a 40-18 loss by the Bears in early October.

This game as long been tapped as the district championship and after an entire season, both teams have fulfilled their preseason expectations.

The Wimberley Texan Cross Country team competed last Wednesday October 22nd in the District 26-4A Meet, held at Starcke Park in Seguin.  It was a day of mixed results for Coach Biggers’ crew, as the Varsity Boys team advanced to the Regional Meet behind a 2nd place finish in the team division.  However, on the girls side there was some disappointment mixed in with the celebration as only one Lady Texan runner made it to the next round of competition.

Volleyball running through district 9-0

The Lady Texans continued their winning ways by defeating La Vernia and Canyon Lake to move to 9-0 in district matches this season.

It was the second matchup against both opponents for the Lady Texans this year, and both matches had their moments of suspense and uncertainty.

In the end, Head Coach Thomas Kane was able to settle his team down and remind them of the level of play they’ve accomplished all season long.

Senior outside hitters Emily Ferguson and Katie Caldwell both had remarkable performances against La Vernia. Senior setter Marissa Gage also stepped up and got her teammates the ball in the right places at the perfect time.

Junior Mattie Adams made her presence felt in the Canyon Lake matchup, diving for loose balls and keeping the play alive despite her opponent’s best efforts.

Texans Wear Down Owls

The Wimberley Texans put their five-game winning streak on the line Friday night at home versus the Hondo Owls in their third district match of the season. They kept that win streak alive with a 28-7 win over the Owls.

After a somewhat slow start, the offense began to utilize their big weapons and call plays that got them the ball in the open field.

The Texans defense forced two turnovers on the Owls' first two possessions, and the senior running back Sam Drew made his opponents pay on the first play of the home team's second drive. Drew caught a designed running back screen from quarterback Colton Cerday and took it 50 yards untouched to put the Texans up 7-0.

Texans pound Pirates

The Wimberley Texans traveled to Lytle on Friday night to take on district opponent Lytle Panthers and managed to fuse an impressive defensive effort with a potent offensive attack to win the game.

After a somewhat slow start, the road team began to run the ball effectively and move the ball down field. A first quarter touchdown on a long sustained drive put the Texans up 7-0 and undoubtedly gave the team confidence as the game moved on.

The Texans defense would not be outdone, pinning the Pirates deep in their own territory on their next possession and forcing a safety to give the team a 9-0 advantage.

Another Texans touchdown in the second quarter put the visitors up 16-0, but the Pirates were not ready to give up so easily.

Texans clip Hawks 35-14

The Texans traveled to Brownwood, Texas, to take on the Iowa City Hawks on Friday night, and the team used their offensive prowess and defensive toughness to control the game from beginning to end. Wimberley put their fifth offensive touchdown on the board before allowing the Hawks in the end zone in the fourth quarter; the final score was 35-14.
I was a good night for Texans senior running back West Lambert, who racked up 176 total yards in the contest. His first 56 yards came on the game’s opening kickoff which gave the Texans excellent field position to start their first drive. Five plays later Texans quarterback Colton Cerday found Lambert open on a second down passing play that resulted in the game’s first score, a 25-yard touchdown to put the Texans up 6-0. The following Jake O’Connor extra point made the score 7-0 just five minutes into the contest.

Lady Texans win again, now 6-0 in district play

The Lady Texans continued their winning streak this past week with in-district victories over Yoakum and Canyon Lake.
The team entered the week with an unblemished 4-0 district record, and were devoted to keeping it the way it was. Their scheduled meeting with Canyon Lake was touted as one of the best in-district matchups of the season, and both teams showed up ready to play.
Wimberley jumped out to an early lead and utilized the hot start to their advantage, applying pressure and attacking relentlessly throughout the first game. The second set was similar to the first, and the Lady Texans took the second game in a decisive manner. Canyon Lake fought hard in the third set, but was unable to take a single game from their opponent, who dominated the match from beginning to end. The scores were 25-14; 25-13; and 25-20.

Texans pound Crusaders, climb to 2-2

The Wimberley Texans traveled north on Friday night to take on the St. Michaels Crusaders and utilized a powerful ground game and an effective plan of attack to control the clock and defeat the home team 48-33.
"We felt like we had a good game plan going in," said Head Coach Doug Warren. "We felt like we could move the ball at will on them. We felt like we could exploit some things and pretty much did what we wanted to."
After a slow start, the Texans began to impose their will against the Crusaders by running the ball between the tackles, and then running it some more. Wimberley racked up 215 yards on 31 carries and scored six touchdowns on the ground. St. Michaels had no answer for the potent rushing attack and Wimberley was dedicated to exploiting the Crusaders' weakness.

Lady Texans undefeated in district

The Lady Texans continued their undefeated run through district play this past week with victories over Poth and La Vernia. The team now has an overall record of 26-8, and remains atop the district standings with a 4-0 record.
After dismissing Poth on Tuesday the Lady Texans set their sights on fellow 4A Region IV District 26 members, the La Vernia Bears. The Bears were 2-2 in district play coming into this match, and both teams were highly anticipating their first meeting of the season.
The first set was back-and-forth from the start, and a couple of big plays from team veterans aided the Lady Texans to a first set, 25-18 victory. Senior setter Marissa Gage showed off her impressive skill set by continually setting the Lady Texans’ hitters up for powerful kill shots.

Iowa Park Hawks up next for Texans

It will be a long road trip for the Wimberley Texans (2-2) to face off against the Iowa Park Hawks (4-1) on Friday night, but not as long as it could be. Iowa Park High School is near Wichita Falls north of Fort Worth. Instead of making that trip, the Texans will play in Brownwood for a neutral site game.
The Hawks are coming off a rough season winning only four games and are only returning nine starters. They have brought in a new coach Aubrey Sims and he seems to have the team headed in the right direction. They have scored over 34 points in each of the last four games.
“They got a new coach and new system, so they are doing things a different way,” Texan Head Coach Doug Warren said. “Right now they are playing with a lot of confidence, and it shows.”
