The Wimberley Texans football team staved off the Canyon Lake rushing attack on Friday night for their first victory of the 2014 season. With the team down by six points with less than two minutes to go in the final quarter, quarterback Colton Cerday marched the team down the field and threw a strike to wide receiver Brock McDorman in the end zone to tie the game with only four ticks left on the clock. The ensuing Jake O’Connor point-after gave the Texans the deciding 28-27 lead and their first victory of this still-young season.

The first game versus Cuero was give-and-take, as neither team was willing to give any sort of advantage to the other, but Wimberley managed to make the big plays in the crucial moments.

The Wimberley Texan football team will face off against the St. Michael’s Crusaders of Austin on Friday night in an away game starting at 7:30 p.m.
While St. Michael’s may be a private school with a 1-3 record on the season, they are not a team the Texans can afford to overlook.
The Crusaders have played a few schools comparably to Wimberley, nearly beating Lago Vista 27-20 and falling to Navarro, a team that beat Wimberley earlier in the season, 43-20.

Lady Texans win district opener

Matt Southall
Sports Writer

The Lady Texans rebounded nicely after their eighth loss of the season to win their first district match of the year, defeating the Gonzales Apaches in straight sets.
Wimberley traveled to Dripping Springs on Tuesday to face one of the state’s top 4A squads. The Tigers are led by Michael Kane, brother of Wimberley head coach Thomas Kane. These two teams face off every season in what has become known as the “Kane Cup.”
The Lady Texans struck first in this match up, stealing the first game due in part to an up-tempo pace on offense and an unmatched defensive mentality. The Tigers would not go quietly; however, and rebounded to take the next three sets, despite the Lady Texans’ best effort. The scores were 20-25; 25-18; 25-20; 25-19.

The Wimberley Texans put forth a valiant effort in Giddings Friday night, but came up one defensive stop short of their first victory of the season. The two football teams traded 60-plus yard passing touchdowns in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter, but when the clock hit triple-zero the Buffaloes were on top 34-31.
“(We’re) disappointed in the loss,” said Head Coach Doug Warren, “Especially the way it happened. The kids fought so hard. They kept coming back from adversity and fighting back. We gave ourselves a chance to win and just didn’t get it done. We had chances to do that.”
