Budget and tax rate proposed by Comm. Court

From Staff Reports

Last week, the Hays County Commissioners Court proposed a tax rate of .4690 per $100 of assessed valuation for FY 2015 and a County budget of $157,417,133 and set hearing dates for public comment on both.
The proposed tax rate is the same as for FY 2014, the current tax year, but since more improved property is on the tax rolls, there would be an increase in tax revenue collected of approximately $3,651,827.

Brookshire Brothers Hatch chili roasting

New Mexico families share a love of these recipes that smell like the comforts of home and which give New Mexicans a bond unlike most states. Green chile is their lifeblood in some ways, as it is mine.
I went to Brookshire Brothers this past weekend to see some green chile roasting action. The sight seemed so extraordinarily out of place for me, but tasting the samples Brookshire Brothers handed out made me really realize how much I missed that taste. The feeling in my stomach was so pleasant like a bite of the most soothing comfort food, and it immediately craved more.

Civic Club to ‘Step out in style’

From Staff Reports

On Friday, Sept. 12, the Wimberley Community Civic Club will begin its 35th year of community service with a challenge to step out in style, with the Wimberley Community Civic Club Annual Style Show.
thirty five years ago, a small group of women in this area recognized the need to reach out and meet the newcomers to our community.  Their purpose was to nurture a strong community spirit through service and financial support while fostering lasting friendships among its members.   From September through May, Civic Club members work to fulfill these goals.  Each year, the organization returns about $35,000 to the community and funds scholarships for college-bound seniors.

Rare owl much sought after in Africa

Jerry Hall
Special to the View

If you travel to Africa anytime soon, I will be most interested in hearing your report on what wildlife you encounter. But I will only be impressed if your sightings include a Pel's fishing-owl. That, apparently, is one rare and very desirable species.
I know because although I saw loads of nice birds and animals on my trip to the Dark Continent, only that owl truly impressed the guides I was traveling with.
We visited Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and among the notable birds we saw were lilac-breasted roller, saddle-billed stork, red bishop, fish-eagle, red-billed hornbill, secretary bird and white-bellied go-away-bird. We also enjoyed seeing elephants, zebras, rhinos, water buffaloes, hippos and giraffes.

Keep Wimberley Beautiful: Bats in Wimberley?

Jackie Mattie

Hays County Master Naturalist

The other night, a friend and I were going to eat dinner at Marco’s Italian Restaurant. As we were parking, lo and behold, thousands of bats were spiraling over us, coming in over and through the trees near Cypress Creek Bridge.
We were astounded as we had not heard anything about the presence of this bat colony. Several nights later, I went by myself to see if these bats were flying out on a fairly regular schedule.
