Junior Henry Wollam represented Wimberley High School at the Texas Future Problem Solving State Bowl in Austin on April 11.  Wollam, who is in Sheila Parker’s B2 creative writing class, placed third in the FPS scenario writing competition and was among three WHS students to compete against writers from around the state.
His work is now being considered for the right to compete at the International competition held at Iowa State University June 12-15.
This year’s scenario winners showcased storyboards and visited with other authors prior to the trophy presentations.
Wollam’s storyboard included original artwork by fellow creative writing student Audrey Marlett and is currently on display in the WHS library.

Letter to the Editor: Bowen Memories

From Barbara A. Clayton

A few months ago, I drove through town past the old Bowen School as I have many, many times in my life. The news that it would be torn down clouded my thoughts. There were workers outside and the doors in the front were open. On a chance that I might get to peek inside one more time before its destruction, I pulled carefully into the old gravel parking area in front of the school. Making my way towards the door, I asked a man who was working there if it would be okay for me to go inside. When I told him how I once taught there, he smiled and waved me in.

Letter to the Editor: WJHS Career Fair

From Jason Valentine
Principal

After a long week of STAAR testing, Danforth JH eighth graders will have the opportunity to participate in a Career Fair on Friday, April 25.  The Career Fair allows students to explore their interests and possible career paths as they enter high school.   We have nearly completed all meetings with our eighth grade students to work on ninth grade schedules so it is definitely time for students to start thinking about “what they want to be when they grow up!”

Powerlines stopping traffic on RR12

By Dalton Sweat
Editor

Traffic was stopped on Ranch Road 12 between the intersection of FM 3237 and the Square in both directions for about two hours today.

A large truck caught a power line at about 11:15 a.m. PEC was able to fix the issue with traffic continuing to move in at least one direction. When the truck began to move, it snagged another power line about 100 yards down the road. This line, which at least one person on the scene said they believed was live, fell to about six feet off the ground.

At this point, traffic was stopped in both directions as police literally walked down the road from their previous road block to assist with traffic control.

A neighbor saw flames coming from the upstairs of Judy Beth Hunter and Hunter Wakeman’s house in Rolling Oaks on Thursday of last week. After alerting Judy Beth and her children, who were inside the house, everyone made it out safely, but the family of five lost most of their possessions.

The house was a total loss.

Officials say that there are no suspicious circumstances, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Wimberley Valley Cultural District

By Dalton Sweat
Editor

The Wimberley Valley has always been known as an artist haven. From famous Texan artist Buck Winn to the likes of musician Ray Wiley Hubbard and hundreds in between, the town has always attracted those with abstract gifts.
That ability may soon be recognized as many in the valley are attempting to get Wimberley listed as a Cultural District with the state of Texas.

What’s up with algae?

Matt Heinemann
Cypress Creek Watershed

“Yuck Mom, what’s all that stuff floating in the water? It looks gross!” These are the words I heard at Jacob’s Well the other day from a 10 year-old in his bathing suit. I admired his bravery for swimming in March’s weather, still too cold for many.  I too wondered what was up with the algae.
