Vandalism at Lions Club, reward offered

By Dalton Sweat

Vandalism struck the Lion’s Club Market Days Field as doors and windows were recently kicked in.
“This is a problem we have over the summer,” Lion’s Club General Manager Frank Williams said. “It kind of runs in spurts and sometimes it just gets to a point that’s bad.”
Doors and windows were kicked in at multiple concession stands. It is difficult to use fingerprints to find perpetrators, because juveniles often commit the crimes, officials said.
“We had one kid stuff a baseball bat down our exhaust in the restrooms, broke stuff in the restrooms,” Williams explained.

Hays ranked one of top U.S. counties to live in

Anita Miller
Daily Record Staff

The map published in The New York Times last month shows a sea of green in Central Texas. It accompanied a piece detailing the best and worse-faring of the nation’s 3,135 counties. Not surprisingly, the green denotes those who are “doing better,” with orange marking those counties that are “doing worse.”
Of Hays and surrounding counties, only Caldwell leaned towards the “doing worse” end of the scale.
Hays County, it turns out, was ranked 186 out of all the nation’s counties, something that prompted U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, whose district includes parts of the county, to send a congratulatory letter to Daily Record publisher Don Moore.

Many indications show that the economy within the city of Wimberley has rebounded well, though officials are still “cautiously optimistic” of the recovery.
Since Jan. 1, the amount of building permits on residential properties is on tract to top last year’s number. Year to date, 52 residential permits have been issued for a value of $7.9 million. The total for 2013 as a whole was 71 permits totaling $7.7 million in residential permits.

The Twin Liquors chain is facing a potential $500,000 fine from the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission that could have an effect on the chain’s Wimberley-based store, according to a report by the Austin American Statesman.
As part of the potential punishment, 10 of Twin Liquors’ 75 stores would no longer be allowed to sell alcohol to bars or restaurants. The Twin Liquors at the Junction is reportedly one of those 10 stores.

Bootiful Wimberley is back on track with 17 of the nearly 30 boots now in Wimberley.
The Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance project was delayed for about two months after the initial vendor did not supply the six-foot-tall boots on time.
Bootiful Wimberley turned to a new vendor, Fountain People in San Marcos, who has helped get the ball rolling again.
“I am very relieved and very excited,” Lynn Myers with Bootiful Wimberley said. “The artists are excited, the sponsors are excited and you will start to see the sculptures out on display at community events as a preview.”

Hays urged to adopt County Fire Code

Anita Miller
Daily Record Staff

Texas is now the second most populated state and the San Marcos area is the fastest-growing spot in the U.S. Yet much of that growth has occurred in areas outside of municipalities where fire protection is largely left to volunteers and there is no fire code to regulate homes and businesses.
To rectify that, Hays County Fire Marshal Mark Chambers will make a presentation to county commissioners on Tuesday about a proposed county fire code. According to the Texas State Data Center, “the near term population projection for Hays County is 157,107 with projections of over 250,000 by 2020,” Chambers wrote in his proposal.
