County calls bond

Anita Miller
Daily Record Staff

Hays County Commissioners waited until the last possible day to call a fall bond election to finance a new jail and other public safety improvements, and then put it off.
In a unanimous vote at Monday’s special meeting, commissioners and County Judge Bert Cobb decided instead to hold a bond election next May.
Back in May of this year, commissioners heard a presentation from consultants Broaddus and Associates about the need for a new jail before personnel at the existing 362-bed facility had to resort to “baling wire and duct tape.”

W.I.S.D one of best in Texas after state test

Dalton Sweat
Editor

W.I.S.D was one of only 26 school districts in Texas to receive a distinction for postsecondary readiness in this year’s state assessment ratings.
“Earning a distinction is not easy,” said Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams said. “Any school earning one or more distinctions should be recognized in its community for the outstanding work taking place on that campus.”
This was one of many distinctions W.I.S.D received. The landscape of what “postsecondary” readiness has changed, and with it, the school district must change also.

Woodcreek proposes tax rate, finds council member for open post

Dalton Sweat
Editor

The city of Woodcreek plans to leave the city’s ad valorem tax at the same rate it has been at since 2011.
“I think keeping the tax rate the same is very important,” Woodcreek Mayor Mike Steinert said. “Personally, I think once you start finding reasons to increase it, it is kind of a slippery slope.”
The tax rate is likely to be set at .135 cents per $100 of property value, which would be about $195 of taxes paid for a property valued at $150,000.
